Abstract

Introduction: Down syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs when a person has an extra copy of chromosome 21 and requires timely attention by physicians and family members. According to the Genetic Society of Ecuador, the incidence of Down syndrome in Ecuador exceeds the world statistics.

Objective: The aim of this study was to characterize Down syndrome through the results obtained in a case study in Ecuador.

Methods: The research had a descriptive epidemiological design and consisted of the development of two clinical cases of Down syndrome.

Results: The first case showed that it was a baby who was born apparently healthy and it was not until 9 months of age that the genetic condition was discovered due to concerns about his maturational and cognitive development. In contrast, in the second case, abnormalities were detected during the first trimester ultrasound that led to the referral of the patient to the genetics service and subsequent prenatal diagnosis.

Conclusion: It is concluded that genetic counseling and early detection of Down syndrome are crucial to promote the well-being and the best developmental conditions of these individuals and their families. The authors consider that there are many important areas that need to be investigated in relation to Down syndrome, and further studies are needed to better understand the underlying biology and genetics, identify new treatments and develop a more complete understanding of the associated cognitive disabilities.
