Abstract

Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is associated with emotional problems such as anxiety and depression, symptoms that decrease the quality of life of sufferers and cause functional difficulties.

Objective: To determine the clinical and functional differences in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with and without symptoms of depression in a clinic in Cali, Colombia.

Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out in 112 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease enrolled in a pulmonary rehabilitation program in a clinic in Cali, Colombia. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale questionnaire was applied to identify symptoms of depression. Ethical recommendations were complied with, and informed consent was obtained from each of the participants.

Results: Sixteen patients were included in the group with depression and 96 in the group without depression. The mean ages were 67 and 69 years, respectively. Significant differences value-p < 0.05 were present in the variables sex, residence, clinical characteristics, height, exposure to wood smoke, domiciliary oxygen, survival and correlations with BODE index, predicted distance, heart rate and peripheral oxygen saturation.

Conclusions: Significant differences were found between depression and the variables height, exposure to wood smoke and domiciliary oxygen; in addition to worse performance in functional capacity in patients with symptoms of depression. However, correlations between depressive symptoms and some clinical variables were positive.
