Abstract

Introduction: Post-traumatic knee synovitis is frequent in men and women who practice sports.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of conventional therapy and the 60 Hz extremely low frequency electromagnetic field in patients with post-traumatic knee synovitis in the first phase of rehabilitation.

Methods: A longitudinal and controlled pilot study was carried out. 82 patients (52 male and 30 female) with post-traumatic knee synovitis and ages between 15 and 35 years old were treated. They were randomly grouped into two experimental groups, one that included 39 patients treated with conventional therapy (cryotherapy + ibuprofen + dipyrone) and another consisting of 43 patients who received the extremely low frequency electromagnetic field of magnetic induction 11 mT, frequency 60 Hz and exposure time 20 min. Visual analogue scale, physical examination, and ultrasonography were used to assess the effectiveness of these two types of therapy.

Results: The degrees of pain, physical examination and ultrasound were decreased in all patients at the end of the study for each type of therapy. The analgesic effectiveness index averages were 61.31 and 97.17% for conventional therapy and the 60 Hz extremely low frequency electromagnetic field, respectively.

Conclusions: The extremely low frequency electromagnetic field of 60 Hz has a greater analgesic and anti-inflammatory effectiveness, and accelerates the rehabilitation time in patients with post-traumatic knee synovitis compared to conventional treatment, taking into account the integrated evaluation and the range of the visual analogue scale, index of analgesic effectiveness and individual response of the patient to the selected therapy.
