Abstract

Objective: To analyze scientific evidence published between 2020 and 2025 regarding the consequences of screen time and physical inactivity in adolescents across different educational, social, and health contexts.

Methods: A scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The databases Scopus, ScienceDirect, Web of Science/SciELO, PubMed, and ProQuest were consulted. Empirical studies published between 2020 and 2025 involving adolescent populations aged 10 to 19 years were included. Out of 154 initial records, 19 studies met the inclusion criteria.

Results: All studies (100 %) employed a quantitative approach, with a predominance of descriptive and cross-sectional designs (74 %), followed by case-control (21 %) and correlational (5 %) studies. Geographically, China accounted for 47 % of the research output, followed by Europe (32 %), Latin America (16 %), and Western Asia (5 %). Findings showed that sedentary behavior and prolonged screen exposure increased the incidence of idiopathic scoliosis, lumbar pain, muscle stiffness, and postural disorders, while also leading to sleep disturbances, anxiety, and social isolation. Regular physical activity was associated with better indicators of postural control, emotional balance, and overall well-being, confirming its protective role against the effects of digital sedentarism.

Conclusions: Adolescent sedentarism constitutes a global biopsychosocial issue that demands integrated educational and health policies aimed at promoting physical movement, school ergonomics, and the responsible use of technology.
