Macroscopic characterization of membranes of chronic subdural hematomas
Keywords:

Introduction: Chronic subdural hematomas is one of the most frequent intracranial hemorrhages in the neurosurgical practice, with an augment incidence in the elderly.
Objective: To describe macroscopics characteristic of membranes during surgery of patients with chronic subdural hematomas.
Methods: A descriptive study was carried out in the Neurosurgery service of the Manuel Ascunce Domenech University Hospital from Camaguey during the year 2022 to 2024. 25 adult patients with tomographic diagnosis of chronic subdural hematoma who underwent craniotomy with membranectomy were included. The direct observation was the method used by neurosurgeons during surgical procedures for the registered macroscopic membranes characteristics.
Results: Male patients between 60 to 70 years of age predominated, with more frequent unilateral hematomas on the left side and thin, membranes were more frequent. The most part of patients exit alive. Different types of parietal and visceral membranes were identified, they differed in aspect, color, thickness and rigidity.
Conclusions: Direct observation aloud identified diversity of parietal and visceral membranes in chronic subdural hematomas. Macroscopic characterization is important for take decisions during surgeries, for prevent complications such as rebleeding and recollections, which are an important factor in postoperative morbidity and mortality.
