Pilates`s vs. Williams`s exercises to prevent subacute low back pain of mechanical origin in soccer players

Abstract

Introduction: The recovery and prevention process of sports injuries, including subacute low back pain, is essential for the achievement of high sports performance, the less frequently a previous injury appears, the less the training direction process will be interrupted, and therefore will optimize sports preparation.

Objective: to determine which of the muscular strengthening systems used (Pilates's or William's) best prevents a lumbar relapse of mechanical origin in soccer players.

Methods: Quasi-experimental research with three independent groups (Group 1: Control-n=24; Group 2: Pilates-n=20; Group 3; Williams-n=21), with previous involvement of subacute low back pain of mechanical origin, performing follow-up and treatment for two years to assess the existence of lumbar relapses of any degree.

Results: The relapses of low back pain mean comparing each independent group were significantly different (k=0.000), with a mean in the control group of 12.71 months, the Pilates's group of 20.95 months, and the William's group of 21.52 months. There were no significant differences in relapse between the Pilates's and Williams's groups (p=0.195), although the mean ranges were better with the Williams exercises (23.24).

Conclusions: Pilates and Williams exercise significantly reduce the appearance time of lumbar relapses in soccer players. However, it could not be demonstrated which of the two physical stimulation methods is more optimal (p=0.195), there is a need for more studies. A systematic treatment with specialized exercises is recommended to avoid relapses, incorporating them into the special warm-up, and into the final phase of the training session, between 3-5 days per microcycle.
