Evolution of Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients Based on Their Vaccination Status

Abstract

Objective: To establish the relationship between vaccination status and the evolution of hospitalized COVID-19 patients, including mortality, at Hospital III, Tacna, Peru.

Methods: This non-experimental and observational analytical research studied 203 medical records from the SGSS system. Descriptive statistics were used, along with Chi-squared tests for categorical variables and logistic regression to analyze mortality. Factors considered included gender, vaccination status, age, ICU admission, PaO2/FiO2 Index, and length of stay.

Results: Of the patients, 65.52% were male, and 67.98% were over 60 years old; 67% were vaccinated. Significant associations were found between the PaO2/FiO2 Index, ICU admission, and mortality with the vaccination status (p<0.05). The multivariate analysis revealed that the PaO2/FiO2 Index, hospital stay duration, age, and vaccination status are significant factors for mortality with odds ratios (OR) of 17, 9, 7, and 5, respectively. Gender and ICU admission did not show significance in the multivariate analysis.

Conclusions: A positive relationship was confirmed between being vaccinated and having a better PaO2/FiO2 Index, fewer ICU admissions, and reduced mortality. Unvaccinated individuals, those over 60 years old, and those with a moderate to severe PaO2/FiO2 Index have a higher mortality risk.
