Abstract

Introduction: Epidemiological studies of dental caries in Colombia have been carried out with a large time lag between them, which makes it difficult to predict their dynamics and affects the adequate planning of public policies in oral health.

Objectives: To simulate predictively the index of decayed, filled and missing teeth in Colombia.

Methods: The dental caries rates reported by the national studies of Oral Health I, II and III were analyzed from simulations of the dynamics in the interval 1965-1997 in analogy with a probabilistic random walk. A prediction was established in 1998 to determine the capability of the method and to forecast the dynamics. Subsequently, three predictive simulations of possible trajectories of the dynamics in 2015 were generated.

Results: A prediction of the index for the year 1998 of 10.34 was determined, which corresponds to a 99.61 % accuracy with respect to the real value reported in the National Oral Health Study III. The simulations of said dynamics to 2015 presented values between 6.69 and 7.35; these are in agreement with the decreases observed in previous studies.

Conclusions: From the probabilistic random walk, mathematical orders were determined with which the dental caries index was predicted. It is a useful method for decision making in public health.
