Abstract

Introduction: Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome is the clinical expression of the abrupt interruption or decrease of alcohol intake in a patient with physical dependence. It produces dopaminergic neuronal imbalance associated with important behavioral disorders.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of ozone on memory capacity in alcoholic rats in abstinence with bromocriptine manipulation.

Methods: Medical ozone (1mg/kg rectally, 15 sessions) was used in a Lewis rat model of alcoholism during withdrawal. Dopaminergic receptors were manipulated with bromocriptine (5mg/kg ip). The Morris Water Maze behavioral test was applied at each stage of the experimental design.

Results: Within the Morris Water Maze, the latency time decreased in ozonated alcoholic rats with respect to non-ozonated rats. This demonstrated the effects of ozone as a regulator of dopaminergic transmission even under extreme conditions of alcohol withdrawal elicited by bromocriptine administration.

Conclusions: Ozone reduced alcohol withdrawal-related memory impairments under conditions of neuronal imbalance reinforced by a dopaminergic agonist.
