Abstract

Introduction: Salivary gland neoplasms are the most heterogeneous and complex group of head and neck tumoral processes.

Objective: Characterize patients with major salivary gland neoplasms undergoing surgical treatment in a Cuban university hospital.

Methods: A cross-sectional observational descriptive study was conducted of patients histologically diagnosed with major salivary gland neoplasms. The variables evaluated were age, sex, type of neoplasm, primary site, histological diagnosis and surgical techniques.

Results: A total 55 neoplasms were studied, of which 45 (81.82%) were benign, with a higher frequency in men (n = 28; 62.22%). Mean age at neoplasm presentation was 55.11 ± 16.04 years, and the most affected age group was 40-59 years (n = 26; 47.27%). The parotid was the most frequently affected gland (n = 48), mainly by pleomorphic adenomas (n = 28; 58.33%). Subtotal parotidectomy was the most common surgical procedure (n = 38; 79.17%).

Conclusions: Benign parotid gland neoplasms presenting in male adult patients were the most frequent type.
